NUSSU BASH

By Steve Teo | January 25, 2009

This is one of the major events where the School of Computing (SoC) made a giant leap towards interacting with the other faculties. NUS Bash is a yearly event, organized by NUSSU, where a male and female representative are chosen from every faculty to compete for the Mr and Ms NUS titles.

This year, it was held on the 24th January at Zouk. Judging by the number of people who attended the event, we could say that it was undoubtedly one of the most happening events of the year! In fact, the crowd included not just NUS students, but also, people from all over Singapore.

Naveen, an experienced hip hop dancer, and Simy, an aspiring model, were the representatives from SoC. According to them, it was one of the most exciting and unique experience. Photoshoots, practices and learning more about the cultures of other faculties were some of the interesting memories of the experience. Out of the five attractive titles, Simy was crowned with the Miss Glamorous title. And now, we wonder, “Who is going to be next?”…

Statement of Apology for Blank Emails sent to NUS mailboxes

By Compclub Exco | January 6, 2009

The Computing Club executive committee offers its sincerest apologies to our fellow students for the blank emails received in your NUS mailboxes over the recent weeks. One such incident was a mailer regarding upcoming activities sent on Monday, 5 January.

On investigation, it has boiled down to a technical glitch occurring with the SquirrelMail email client and we are currently working to rectify the problem as soon as possible. Sending publicity mailers is an issue of importance to us due to the frustration it can cause to students, and rest assured that internal trial sends are conducted prior to every mailer sent out.

At the same time, we are thankful for concerned emails highlighting this glitch to us, and we certainly hope to have our student body’s future trust and cooperation through efforts to avoid such errors on our part. Feel free to share with us any further queries you may have at compclub@comp.nus.edu.sg

Wishing all a great 2009 ahead,
Chua Lu Sien

Dean’s Dialogue Held on 7th November

By CommsDir | December 25, 2008

Introduction
The dialog was held on 7th November.
Terms used: Computing club referred to as “Club”; Faculty and school management referred to as “Faculty” in this discussion hereof.

Project emphasis in Computing modules
1. Club presented the case that project assignments in SoC modules e.g. the level-2000 modules were becoming more complicated
1.1) Case comparison e.g. in CS2105
1.1.1) Semester 2, AY2007/08: Web server with multi-threading capability and MTA client communicating with SMTP server; development of reliable protocol that can transfer files over UDP
1.1.2) Semester 1, AY2008/09: Web server crawler with persistent data records; instant messaging client based on unique messaging protocol
1.2) Club thus suggested that lecturers could consider increasing project work proportion of marks in the final grade or ensuring parity of assignment difficulty levels across semesters
1.3) Faculty mentioned that the idea of an assignment being difficult is a subjective notion and it is difficult to pronounce judgments similar to the above. However, faculty has suggested that club can hold discussions prior to the start of modules with lecturers to further better negotiate on this issue as faculty does not have enough concrete information to comment

SoC Day
2. Club suggested having a ¼ to ½ day common timeslot where SoC students will be lesson-free during SoC week next semester (Semester 2, AY2008/09). Students will attend morning lessons then join in the afternoon for celebratory activities. At the moment, faculty has scheduled for such a timeslot for next semester and the exact date and timing is pending confirmation.

SoC Test Week System
3. Club reflected that SoC students wanted a Test Week system such as those practiced in the polytechnics, as this allows most SoC students to have a predictable schedule that marks the beginning and end of mid-term test periods. From this, SoC students can coordinate the synchronized suspension/resumption of co-curricular activities with greater ease. To this, faculty expressed reservation that the system in polytechnics could be implemented with  fewer difficulties as a polytechnic does not share the planning complexity that arise from the much larger array of courses offered in a university. In view of such difficulties, faculty has decided to look into the matter but is unable to issue a guarantee.

Club Floor Area Allocation
4. Club expressed the wish that it be allocated committee rooms 1 and 2, student lounge and TR13 as its official club premises. The discussion centered about space constraints in COM1 due to demand for academic floor area from teaching staff. In view of this, Dean decided that Club will be allocated TR13 and student lounge. TR10, Committee rooms 1 and 2 will be re-allocated back to Faculty as rooms for academic usage.

Print Station at COM1 level 2

5. Club suggested setting up a standalone print station to be housed within student lounge. Rationale being that students with a need for print services can quickly connect up their laptops to the portable print stations at level 2, eliminating need to travel down to the printers at level 1 and basement. Faculty indicated that it needs to further assess the feasibility of such a facility and hence is unable to issue an immediate approval.

Tables and Chairs in COM1

6. Considering the shortage of tables and chairs in COM1 premises during peak periods such as weeks leading to term project submission or examination and reading weeks, Club proposed that more tables and chairs be provided for SoC students to engage in much-needed discussions in school. Faculty approved such an arrangement; implementation is already underway; for the recently concluded examination season (Semester 1, AY08/09), such facilities were provided to students.

A4 Paper Print Quota

7. A recently held school-wide survey of student opinion prompted club to propose increasing monthly A4 paper print quota by approximately 10 per cent. In actual figures this means boosting print quota from 50 to 55-60. Faculty in response stated it will look into the matter and bring up the issue to SoC IT Unit but no confirmation will be given as there are environmental concerns with regards to the increased usage of paper.

Issue of Digital Life (Straits Times)
8. In seeking to model Club operations like those of the major Clubs such as Engineering, Arts and Science clubs, Club recommended that Faculty allow Club to bring in copies of Digital Life for free distribution to SoC students. The bottom-line is to create greater self-awareness among SoC students of the opportunities abundant in IT careers through readership of such publications. The conclusion was that Club will be granted permission to negotiate with Straits Times for such a possible arrangement to take place.

Access Control in COM1

9. There has been feedback that non-SoC students are occupying precious studying corners in COM1, depriving SoC students of studying space in their own school. The Club has proposed building gantries/installing more access card readers into COM1 to prevent non-SoC students from gaining entry. However, Faculty has rejected such an idea, citing that COM1 premises are considered public (i.e. open to all NUS students), which renders it inappropriate to put in place such access controls.
